We are going to be blunt about the LEAF, because being vague about it would not help anyone.

The LEAF's battery is passively cooled. It has no liquid thermal management — no way to shed heat other than time. Every other mainstream EV in this list actively cools its pack. In Australian conditions, that difference is the whole story, because heat is the primary driver of capacity loss and an Australian summer is unforgiving.

The result is that LEAFs vary enormously. Two 2019 cars with the same odometer can be in genuinely different condition depending on where they lived, how often they were rapid-charged, and whether they spent summers parked in the sun at 100% charge.

That is not a reason to avoid a LEAF. A well-kept later car with a healthy pack is one of the best-value electric cars in Australia. It is a reason that, on this model more than any other, a model-level average tells you nothing and the specific car tells you everything.

Reading the bars — and why they are not enough

The LEAF shows battery health as a column of segments beside the charge gauge, twelve when new. Nissan's warranty guarantees against dropping below nine bars within 8 years or 160,000 km — not below a percentage. Nissan does not publish a percentage, and we will not convert one for you.

Bars are coarse. Each one covers a wide band of actual capacity, so a car that has just lost a bar and a car about to lose one can look identical on the dash while being meaningfully different to own. Worse, the gauge tells you nothing about cell balance — and on an ageing passively-cooled pack, an uneven pack is exactly the failure mode you want to catch.

What good and bad look like

On a 39 kWh usable pack, capacity loss is unforgiving because there was never much headroom. A 2019 LEAF at 80% State of Health has roughly 31 kWh usable — at a modelled 16.6 kWh/100 km, about 188 km in ideal conditions, and meaningfully less in winter with the heater running or at sustained highway speed.

For a second car doing short suburban trips, that is still perfectly usable and probably cheap. For someone expecting the 270 km on the original brochure, it is a nasty surprise.

What to check before you buy

  • Bars remaining, as the warranty measure — and measured State of Health, as the real one

  • Cell voltage spread, which matters more on this car than on any other in this list

  • Where the car has spent its life. A Darwin LEAF and a Hobart LEAF of the same age are not the same purchase, and it is a fair question to ask a seller.

  • Rapid-charge frequency, which on a pack with no active cooling compounds quickly

  • Whether it was routinely left at 100% or near 0%, both of which are hard on it
