Polestar is unusual in writing the guarantee in the language a buyer cares about: if State of Health drops below 70% of original capacity within 8 years or 160,000 km, the battery is repaired or replaced at no cost, and the cover applies regardless of a change in ownership.
That matters because it makes a measured figure directly meaningful. On most cars you measure State of Health and then have to interpret what the manufacturer might do about it. On a Polestar, the measurement maps straight onto the warranty.
The packs Australia got
| Variant | Years | Usable kWh | Claimed range | Real-world consumption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Range Single Motor | 2022–2023 | 66.0 (69.0 gross) | 478 km | 17.6 kWh/100km — modelled |
| Long Range Single Motor | 2022–2023 | 75.0 (78.0 gross) | 551 km | 15.5 kWh/100km — modelled |
| Long Range Dual Motor | 2022–2023 | 75.0 (78.0 gross) | 487 km | 19.2 kWh/100km — modelled |
| Standard Range Single Motor (facelift, RWD) | 2024–2026 | 67.0 (70.0 gross) | 554 km | 16.5 kWh/100km — modelled |
| Long Range Single Motor (facelift, RWD) | 2024–2026 | 79.0 (82.0 gross) | 659 km | 16.6 kWh/100km — modelled |
| Long Range Dual Motor (facelift) | 2024–2026 | 79.0 (82.0 gross) | 596 km | 17.4 kWh/100km — modelled |
The 2024 facelift changed more than the trim. Polestar moved the Single Motor cars from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive and fitted larger packs, and the efficiency improved substantially — the facelifted Long Range Single Motor claims 659 km against the earlier car's 551 km on only 4 kWh more usable capacity.
For a used buyer that is a meaningful split. A 2023 and a 2024 Polestar 2 are closer to different cars than to different model years.
What normal looks like
A Polestar 2 under four years old should measure in the high eighties to low nineties. These are nickel-chemistry packs with active thermal management, so they behave predictably — the early loss is front-loaded, then the curve flattens.
Because Polestar publishes a 70% floor, you can reason precisely: a car at 88% has used roughly two-fifths of the buffer between new and the warranty threshold. A car at 79% at the same age has used most of it, and something about that particular vehicle is worth understanding.
What to check before you buy
Pre- or post-facelift, which changes drivetrain, pack and expected efficiency
Measured State of Health against the 70% floor
Cell voltage spread
In-service date and odometer against 8 years and 160,000 km
DC fast-charge history, which matters more on nickel chemistry than on LFP
