The Model Y is now one of the most common used EVs in Australia, which means there are enough of them on the market to be selective. A well-kept example under five years old should measure in the high eighties to low nineties for State of Health. The variable that trips people up is not age — it is which generation and which pack.

Two caveats we are not going to paper over. The Juniper RWD's usable capacity is listed by European sources as 60.0 kWh against a 64.0 kWh gross pack, while Australian reporting quotes 62.5 kWh — those figures do not reconcile, and we have marked the 60.0 kWh as provisional. And two different Long Range RWD packs exist globally, a 75.0 kWh usable and a Tesla 4680 pack at 74.0 kWh usable; which one Australian cars carry is unconfirmed. Neither uncertainty is large enough to change a buying decision, but you should know it exists rather than be given false precision.

Note also that Tesla's Australian range claims run consistently lower than its European ones on the same cars. Use the Australian figure.

What Australian measured consumption tells you

The Model Y Long Range AWD is the one Model Y we have a measured Australian consumption figure for, and at 16.7 kWh/100 km it is meaningfully thirstier than the modelled estimates suggest for its siblings. On a 75 kWh usable pack that is roughly 450 km of real-world range on a new battery — comfortably short of the 533 km claim.

That gap is not a fault. It is the difference between a standardised test cycle and Australian roads, speeds and air conditioning. What it means practically is that a 12% capacity loss on a Model Y does not cost you 12% of 533 km — it costs you 12% of about 450 km, and that is the number that decides whether the car still does your longest regular trip.

The Australian Automobile Association's testing found claimed range overstated across the EVs it tested by between 5% and 23%. The Model Y was among the best performers at 3–8%.

What to check before you buy

  • Generation and pack — Juniper or pre-Juniper changes both the expected figures and the car

  • Measured State of Health, plus cell voltage spread

  • Whether the car did rideshare or delivery work, which is common on Model Ys and shows up in cycle count long before it shows in the paint

  • Tyre wear, which on a heavy AWD car tells you how it was driven
