Almost every battery warranty gives you a single figure at the end of a long term: 70% at eight years. That is a low bar and a long wait, and a car can underperform for years while still being technically on track to clear it.
Volkswagen is the exception. For the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz it publishes a stepped curve:
78% at 3 years or 60,000 km
74% at 5 years or 100,000 km
70% at 8 years or 160,000 km
That changes what a measurement means. If an ID.4 at four years measures 75%, it is not simply "above 70%" — it is below where Volkswagen itself says it should be at five years. That is a concrete, manufacturer-defined basis for a conversation, three or four years earlier than a single floor would allow.

What normal looks like
The ID.4 is recent enough in Australia that most used examples are one to two years old. Expect low-to-mid nineties, comfortably above the 78% three-year checkpoint.
The PHEV warning, if you are cross-shopping
Volkswagen's plug-in hybrids — Golf GTE, Touareg R, Tiguan eHybrid — get the same 8 years and 160,000 km but no capacity guarantee at all. Volkswagen states plainly that "a reduction in the net battery energy capacity during the warranty period is component-related and does not constitute a defect."
That is unusually candid, and it is the opposite of the position on the electric cars. If you are choosing between an ID.4 and a Tiguan eHybrid, the battery warranty is a genuine point of difference, not a formality.
