BYD covers the traction battery on its Australian EV and plug-in hybrid models for 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, with a guarantee of at least 70% battery capacity retention. The cover runs with the vehicle and is transferable from owner to owner.
It applies across the range — Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion 6, Sealion 7 and Shark 6 — and BYD backdated the simplified terms to every car it has sold in Australia since August 2022. That last detail is unusually generous and worth knowing if you are buying an early Atto 3.
The separate vehicle warranty is 6 years or 150,000 km. The battery outlasts it.

Why this matters more on a BYD than on most brands
BYD sells in volume to private buyers, and a large number of the Atto 3s and Dolphins now appearing on the used market are three-year-old cars still comfortably inside their battery cover. When you buy one, that cover comes with you.
That makes the tested condition of the pack the main variable, not the paperwork. A 2023 Atto 3 Extended Range has a 60.5 kWh usable pack. What you actually want to know is how much of that is left — and whether the seller's car sits above or below what is normal for its age.
The honest limitation
A 70% floor is a long way down. Between a healthy pack at 90% and the warranty threshold at 70% sits roughly a fifth of the car's range, and none of that loss triggers a claim. On an Atto 3 Standard Range — 345 km claimed, and independently measured by the Australian Automobile Association at around 17.1 kWh/100 km, which is materially thirstier than the claim — a 20% capacity loss is the difference between a car that does the school run comfortably and one that does not.
The warranty is your floor. The test result is your decision.
What to check on a used BYD
- The date of first registration, which starts the 8-year clock
- The odometer against 160,000 km
- Whether the car is a Standard or Extended Range variant, because the capacity differs by more than 10 kWh
- The tested State of Health, which is the only number that tells you what you are actually buying
