Toyota runs two completely different battery warranties in Australia, and confusing them is the most common mistake hybrid owners make.
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid traction batteries
For vehicles purchased after 1 January 2019, Toyota covers the hybrid traction battery for 5 years with unlimited kilometres, extendable to 10 years — but the extension is conditional. You must have the vehicle serviced to Toyota's logbook schedule and complete an annual Traction Battery Health Check after the fifth year. Miss the check, and the extension does not apply. The warranty transfers to a new owner for the remainder of the period.
Capacity degradation is excluded from this cover. It protects against the battery failing. It does not protect against the battery gradually holding less, which is what actually happens to a Prius, Camry, RAV4 or Kluger hybrid over a decade.
This is the single most important thing for a used hybrid buyer to understand. A 2017 Camry Hybrid with a tired pack has no warranty remedy. The seller is not hiding anything — there simply is no cover for that.
Battery electric — the bZ4X
Toyota's BEVs are on different terms: 8 years or 160,000 km, with a 70% capacity floor. Toyota's wording is that the battery is covered "if battery energy storage capacity falls below 70% of original capacity."
That cover excludes commercial use — taxi, hire and rideshare vehicles are outside it. Given how many EVs end up in rideshare fleets, check what the car was used for, not just how far it has been driven.

Why the annual health check is worth more than it looks
Most owners treat the annual Traction Battery Health Check as a box to tick for the warranty extension. It is also, quietly, the mechanism by which Toyota builds a documented history of your pack's condition.
If you are selling, that history is worth money. If you are buying, ask whether the checks were done and what they said — a Toyota hybrid with an unbroken record of health checks is a materially better purchase than the same car without one, and it is one of the few places in the used market where documentation of battery condition already exists.
What to check on a used Toyota hybrid
- Whether the annual health checks were done, and the results
- The purchase date, which determines whether the 2019-onward terms apply at all
- Whether the car has been used commercially, which matters for a bZ4X
- The tested condition of the pack, because Toyota's warranty will not help you with degradation and the dashboard will not tell you
