Why mountains ownership is different
Two things make a Blue Mountains EV different from a flatland one, and they pull in opposite directions.
The climbs. Running up the Great Western Highway from Penrith to Katoomba is a sustained ascent of around a thousand metres. That is genuinely demanding — high, prolonged power draw, which generates heat in the pack. Owners who commute down the hill and back do this twice a day.
The regeneration. The trip back down returns a substantial amount of that energy. Descending EVs recover charge continuously, which is why mountains owners often report better real-world consumption than the terrain suggests.
The net effect on battery health is not dramatic, but the duty cycle is unusual, and a pack that spends its life alternating between heavy draw and heavy regeneration is worth testing properly rather than assuming.
The climate helps. The Upper Mountains run considerably cooler than the Sydney basin, and heat is the main enemy of a lithium pack. A Katoomba car has had an easier thermal life than a Penrith one of the same age — which is worth knowing when you are comparing two cars on price alone.
Range matters more up here
Charging infrastructure is thinner in the mountains than in the metropolitan area, and the journeys people make are longer. A capacity figure that would be a footnote in the inner west is a practical constraint when the return trip to Sydney is part of your week.
