BYD's Atto 3 uses the company's own Blade lithium-iron-phosphate pack, and LFP chemistry is genuinely durable — it tolerates full charging, degrades slowly and handles heat better than the nickel chemistries. A three-year-old Atto 3 measuring in the low nineties is entirely normal and not something to negotiate over.
The problem with the Atto 3 is not the battery. It is the gap between the claimed range and what the car actually does.

BYD publishes "49.92 kWh" for the Standard Range without stating whether that is usable or gross. We have recorded it as published rather than guess, which means any range calculation on that variant carries a margin we cannot close.
The 23% finding
The Australian Automobile Association's Real-World Testing Program measured the Atto 3's claimed range as overstated by 23% — the worst result of any EV in its test set.
Run the arithmetic on the Extended Range: 60.5 kWh usable at a measured 18.0 kWh/100 km is roughly 336 km, against a 420 km claim. On a brand-new battery.
Now apply degradation. At 90% State of Health that is about 302 km. At 80% it is about 269 km. Those are the numbers that decide whether the car works for you — not the 420 on the window sticker.
None of this is a defect and none of it is a warranty matter. It is simply the difference between a test cycle and a real road, and on this particular car it is larger than average.
Why measuring an Atto 3 still matters
If LFP is durable and BYD's warranty is strong, why test it?
Because "durable on average" is not "durable in this car". LFP packs are more tolerant, not immune — a car that has spent three years fast-charging in Western Sydney summers is not the same as one that trickle-charged in a Blue Mountains garage. And because the Atto 3's real-world range is already tight against its claim, any capacity loss on this model bites sooner than it would on a longer-range car.
There is also a practical point: the Atto 3 is one of the highest-volume used EVs in Australia now. When there are thirty of them within driving distance, knowing which one has the healthiest pack is how you choose.
Warranty position
BYD covers it for 8 years or 160,000 km with a guaranteed 70% capacity retention, transferable between owners, and BYD backdated these terms to every car it has sold in Australia since August 2022. That is among the clearest positions of any brand. Full terms: BYD battery warranty in Australia.
