The IONIQ 5 is one of the better-engineered electric cars sold in Australia — 800-volt architecture, fast DC charging, genuinely good thermal management. Its packs age well.

The oddity is the warranty. Hyundai covers the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 160,000 km, transferable, but publishes no minimum State of Health percentage anywhere — not on its warranty page, not in its warranty terms document. The only capacity-related commitment is that a replacement battery will at least match the original's capacity before failure.

Kia — the same corporate group, sharing the same platform on the EV6 — does publish a 70% floor. Two closely related cars, two different positions on the thing that matters most to a used buyer.

Two of those consumption figures carry a caveat we are not going to bury. The Extended Range RWD and the 84 kWh RWD figures are EV Database mild-weather estimates rather than combined figures. They are optimistic. In a warm Australian climate they are not unreasonable, but they are not like-for-like with the other rows and you should not plan a winter road trip on them.

What normal looks like

A well-kept IONIQ 5 under four years old should measure in the high eighties to low nineties. The 800-volt system and active cooling mean these cars tolerate frequent DC fast charging better than most — which is fortunate, because the ability to charge very quickly is exactly why people fast-charge them often.

With no published floor, though, there is nothing to measure against except what is typical. That makes a comparative figure — how this car sits against others of its age and distance — more useful than an absolute one.

  • Which pack — 54, 74 or 80 kWh usable, a 26 kWh spread

  • Measured State of Health, which here is the only capacity information anyone will give you

  • Cell voltage spread

  • In-service date and odometer against 8 years and 160,000 km

  • Whether it was used commercially, common on 800-volt cars used for long-distance work
