The Kona Electric was one of the first genuinely usable small electric SUVs in Australia, which means the early cars are now old enough to be interesting — and old enough that battery condition is the main thing separating a good buy from a bad one.

The first-generation 64 kWh car is the significant one on the used market. It was genuinely efficient for its era, and a healthy example still returns real-world range that compares well with much newer cars.

Why measurement matters more on a Kona than on most

Hyundai covers the battery for 8 years or 160,000 km and publishes no minimum capacity percentage at all. Degradation is not, by itself, a claimable event — you would need something to have failed.

What normal looks like

A first-generation 64 kWh Kona from 2019 or 2020 has had five or six Australian summers. A well-kept example should still measure in the mid-to-high eighties. Below 80% at that age suggests heat exposure, heavy DC fast charging, or a specific issue with that car.

The 39 kWh cars are less forgiving of loss simply because there is less to lose. At 85% a 39 kWh pack has about 33 kWh usable — at a modelled 16.0 kWh/100 km, roughly 208 km in good conditions and meaningfully less in winter at highway speed.

What to check before you buy

  • Which generation and which pack — the spread is 39 to 65 kWh usable

  • Measured State of Health and cell voltage spread, since there is no warranty floor to fall back on

  • Where the car has lived, because five or six summers is enough for climate to show

  • DC fast-charge frequency

  • In-service date and odometer against 8 years and 160,000 km
