Auburn and the Parramatta Road corridor form one of the densest used-car retail strips in Sydney, and a growing share of what moves through it is electric or hybrid — including a lot of ex-fleet and ex-lease stock.
Why ex-fleet EVs need more scrutiny, not less
Fleet cars look good. They are usually late-model, well-presented, fully serviced and honestly described. What the presentation does not show is how the battery was used.
Fleet and lease cars cycle hard. A three-year-old ex-fleet EV has typically done many more full charge cycles than a six-year-old private car with the same odometer, and cycles age a battery more than distance.
They fast-charge constantly. Commercial use means charging on the road, quickly, because downtime costs money. Frequent DC fast charging generates heat, and heat drives capacity loss.
Some carry no battery warranty at all. Toyota's bZ4X capacity cover excludes commercial use, naming taxi, hire and rideshare specifically. If the car came out of a fleet, cover you assumed you were inheriting may not exist.
None of this makes an ex-fleet EV a bad buy — they are often excellent value. It means the odometer is not the measure of how hard it has worked, and the battery is.
Testing at a dealership
We attend dealer sites, but the dealer has to agree. Ask before you are deep in a deal rather than after — a dealer confident in their stock usually says yes, and one who will not has answered a question for you.
Some will offer their own battery report instead. That is worth having, and it is worth knowing it was produced by the party selling the car.
