Bankstown has one of the more active private used-car markets in Sydney, and a distinctive feature of it: a lot of older hybrids still changing hands.

Camrys, Prius and Corollas from the nickel-metal-hydride era are common here, often as second or third-owner cars with real kilometres. That is a genuinely different assessment from a three-year-old electric SUV, and it is worth understanding what you are actually buying.

Why older hybrids are worth checking here specifically

A hybrid traction battery typically lasts 8 to 10 years or roughly 160,000 to 200,000 kilometres, with a fault usually appearing once health falls to around 70 per cent — and the cause is almost always a few weak modules rather than the whole pack failing.

Australian remanufacturers report that packs arriving condemned as faulty often still hold 70 per cent or more of their capacity. So a hybrid with a warning light is not necessarily a write-off, and one without a light is not necessarily healthy.

The good news for a Bankstown buyer is that the older nickel-metal-hydride packs are the cheaper ones to fix — Australia's module-repair industry was built around them, and reconditioned and aftermarket options are widely available. The newer lithium hybrids have fewer cheap paths.
