Search for a hybrid battery test in Australia and look at who comes back. Battery specialists. Reconditioning workshops. Companies with a price list of replacement packs on the next page.

They are not dishonest. Most are skilled, and if you genuinely need a battery they are who you want. But the person telling you whether your battery is failing should not be the person who profits from the answer being yes. That is a structural conflict, and it exists in almost every hybrid battery assessment offered in this country.

We test. We do not sell batteries, we do not fit batteries, and we have no commercial relationship with anyone who does. If your pack is fine, that is the whole report, and we have no second page.

What an independent hybrid assessment covers

We come to the vehicle, wherever it is, and produce a written report at the appointment. For a conventional hybrid that means:

  • The condition of the traction battery as the vehicle's own management system reports it

  • Module and block voltage spread — the single most useful early indicator, because hybrid packs almost never fail as a whole unit

  • Stored and pending fault codes from the hybrid system, including codes that have not yet triggered a dashboard light

  • Cooling system condition, which is a genuine and frequently misdiagnosed failure point

  • A plain-English verdict you can act on, or take to a mechanic

Why module spread matters more than a single number

Australian hybrid remanufacturers are consistent on this point: packs typically fault after losing 20 to 30 per cent of capacity, and the cause is usually individual cells rather than the whole unit. Infinitev, one of the larger Australian remanufacturers, has told Australian motoring press that packs arriving for remanufacture and diagnosed as faulty often still retain 70 per cent or more of their capacity.

Read that again, because it is the practical heart of hybrid battery ownership: a pack can be condemned while most of it is still healthy. What condemns it is usually a small number of weak modules dragging down the rest.

A single overall health figure can hide that entirely. A spread reading does not.

The cooling fault that gets misdiagnosed as a dead battery

Toyota and Lexus nickel-metal-hydride packs are air-cooled, drawing cabin air through an intake — usually near the rear seat or parcel shelf — a duct, and a filter. Dust, lint and pet hair block that intake. The pack runs hot. Cells degrade unevenly. Eventually a fault appears.

Toyota even has a dedicated dashboard message for it: "Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts."

A blocked cooling path is a service item. It is not a failed battery. But a car presenting with heat-related symptoms and a warning light can easily be quoted for a replacement pack by someone who has not looked at the intake — and an owner with no independent opinion has no way to push back.

This is exactly the situation where a test from someone with nothing to sell is worth the price of the test several times over.

What we will tell you honestly

An electric car and a conventional hybrid are assessed with different equipment and produce different kinds of result. A hybrid's traction battery is small, works in a narrow charge window, and is managed very differently from an EV's. We do not pretend one test covers both, and we do not describe a hybrid assessment using the terminology of our EV service.

We will also tell you where the assessment stops. It reads what the vehicle's systems make available and what can be measured non-invasively at the car. It is not a teardown, we do not open the pack, and we do not perform repairs.

What to do with the result

If the pack is healthy, you have a dated, written, independent record — useful when you sell, and useful if a workshop later tells you otherwise.

If it is not, you have evidence of what is wrong before anyone quotes you, and the knowledge that a module-level repair may be an option. Australian specialists routinely replace individual modules on nickel-metal-hydride packs rather than the whole unit, and that is a materially cheaper path than a full replacement.
