Blacktown and the surrounding suburbs make up one of the largest local government areas in the country by population, with very high private car ownership and an active used-car trade — both dealer and private sale.

That combination is good for a buyer. There is genuine choice, which means you do not have to accept the first car you find, and you can afford to walk away from one with a tired battery.

What we see locally

Driveway parking is the norm. Blacktown is predominantly freestanding housing, so most cars sit outside overnight and through the day. Combined with western Sydney summer temperatures, that is the harder end of the thermal spectrum for a battery.

High-kilometre commuters. A lot of Blacktown households commute into the inner city or across to the north-west employment corridors, which means real distance and — on an EV — deep, regular charge cycles. Cycles age a battery more than kilometres do, so a commuter car's odometer understates how hard it has worked.

Multi-car households. Many homes here run two or three cars, which often means one is a low-kilometre second vehicle. Those can be excellent buys, and a measurement is what separates a genuinely lightly-used car from one that simply sat at a high state of charge in the sun for four years — which is its own kind of hard life.
