Box Hill is among the newest residential areas in Sydney, which gives its electric vehicles a characteristic almost no other suburb shares: nearly all of them are still comfortably inside their battery warranty.

That is worth acting on rather than filing away.

Why an in-warranty vehicle is the right one to measure

A battery warranty is a wasting asset. Every one of them is a race between two clocks — years and kilometres — and whichever runs out first ends the cover. Nobody writes to tell you it has happened. There is no dashboard warning and no reminder at a service.

If a pack is below the manufacturer's threshold while the cover is live, that is a repair or replacement worth many thousands of dollars. If you establish the same thing a few months after the cover lapses, it is yours to pay for.

The gap between those two outcomes is often short, and the only thing standing between them is knowing where you actually stand. A dated, independent measurement taken while the warranty is live is what turns "the range seems a bit worse lately" into a documented position.

Volkswagen and Cupra are the clearest case. They publish a stepped guarantee — 78% at 3 years or 60,000 km, 74% at 5 years or 100,000 km, 70% at 8 years — so a vehicle can be checked against the manufacturer's own expectation years before any final threshold. Almost nobody does this, and it is free leverage for anyone who does. Check the terms for your brand.

What the local environment does

The same pattern as the rest of the north-west growth area: new housing with garages, near-universal rooftop solar and gentle home AC charging, set against an estate with no mature tree canopy that runs hot on a summer afternoon and holds the heat into the evening.

A garaged vehicle here has had a genuinely good life. One kept on an open driveway at 100% charge through summer has not, and the difference between those two on the same street is larger than most owners would expect.
