Marsden Park is one of the fastest-growing parts of the north-west, and like the other land-release areas it has a distinctive combination for an electric vehicle: very new housing, very high EV uptake, very little shade, and long commutes.
Young estate, young fleet
Almost everything here is recent. The houses are new, the garages are standard, and rooftop solar is close to universal. That produces the charging profile a battery would choose for itself if it could — slow AC, at home, frequently during the day off the household's own generation, rarely on a DC fast charger.
Slow AC charging barely warms a pack. DC fast charging pushes very high current in and generates real heat doing it, and repeated heat cycling is what permanently removes capacity. A vehicle that has done three or four years of home AC charging has had a materially easier life than an identical vehicle run off highway chargers, and it usually measures that way.
The offsetting factor is the environment
New estates have no mature canopy. Dark roofs, dark driveways, compact blocks and a high proportion of hard surface mean these areas run hotter on a summer afternoon than established suburbs with big trees, and they hold that heat later into the evening.
Since heat is the main driver of permanent capacity loss, that pulls the other way against the good charging habits. A garage helps a great deal — and most vehicles here have one — but a vehicle left on an open driveway at a high state of charge through a north-west summer is getting the worst of both.
The commute is real
Marsden Park commutes are long, whether by car the whole way or driving to a Metro station. That means genuine daily distance and, on an EV, deep regular charge cycles. Cycles age a pack faster than kilometres do, so a commuter vehicle's odometer understates the work the battery has done.
The net picture is usually a vehicle in good condition that has nonetheless been used properly — which is exactly the case where a measurement is more informative than an assumption in either direction.
