The river suburbs between Gladesville and Hunters Hill have a high proportion of households running a second vehicle, and a good number of residents commute by ferry or bus rather than by car. That produces a lot of vehicles that sit still for long stretches.

Standing still is not neutral

This is the part almost nobody is told, and it is the single most avoidable thing owners do to their batteries.

A lithium pack ages two ways at once. Cycling tracks energy through the battery — roughly, kilometres. Calendar ageing happens whether the vehicle moves or not, and it is driven mainly by temperature and by the state of charge the pack sits at.

A cell held near full sits at a higher voltage, and higher voltage accelerates the chemistry that permanently removes capacity. It is not dramatic over a week. Over four years of near-permanent full charge, it is measurable.

So the vehicle plugged in and charged to 100% every Sunday night, then left until the following Saturday, has spent most of its life at high voltage. The identical vehicle left at 50-60% between uses has aged noticeably less. Neither owner did anything wrong — one of them was simply told.

Nearly every modern EV has a charge limit. For a vehicle that mostly sits, around 50-60% with a top-up before a longer trip is materially kinder than keeping it full.

LFP is the exception — BYD, and Tesla's Standard Range and RWD models — where a periodic full charge is recommended, because the battery management system needs one to recalibrate. Establish the chemistry before you judge the habit.

Why this matters to a buyer

A low-kilometre second car sells at a premium, and often deserves it — garaged, gently used, full history. But the battery is the one component where the usual signals of a well-kept vehicle do not reliably predict the outcome, and it is also the most expensive component in the vehicle.

A measurement is how you find out whether the premium is justified. Frequently it is. Occasionally it is not, and that is exactly when you want to know.

The local environment helps

Gladesville and the surrounding river suburbs are leafy, close to the water and temperature-moderated, with garages common on the established housing stock. Heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss, and there is relatively little of it here by Sydney standards.
