Leppington sits on the boundary between the south-west growth corridor and the remaining acreage country behind it, and its electric vehicles split into two quite different populations.
Distance is the local variable
Whichever side of that boundary a household sits on, the distances here are longer than in established Sydney. Shops, schools, work and the motorway are all a drive away rather than a walk, and there is far less public charging than in the inner suburbs.
That makes real-world range a practical question rather than an abstract one — and real-world range is downstream of battery health.
The figure on the window sticker is a laboratory result. What a vehicle actually delivers depends on its measured State of Health, the speed it is driven at, the load it carries and the temperature. A used EV claiming 450 km that has quietly lost 15% of its capacity is a 380 km vehicle in ideal conditions and rather less at 100 km/h on the M7 with the air conditioning running.
For an inner-suburb buyer that gap is an inconvenience. Out here, where the nearest fast charger may not be where you need it, it is the difference between a vehicle that suits your life and one that does not. Our range reality calculator does that arithmetic honestly, including a winter allowance and a sensible reserve.
Acreage properties change the charging picture
Properties on larger blocks out this way are more likely to have three-phase power, which means faster home AC charging, and more likely to have substantial rooftop solar. Both are good news for a battery — AC charging at home is far gentler than repeated DC fast charging, and daytime solar charging is gentler still because the current is modest.
They are also more likely to tow. A horse float, a boat or a plant trailer roughly doubles an electric vehicle's energy consumption and puts sustained high current draw on the pack for long periods. That is not damaging — the drivetrain is built for it — but it is a heavier duty cycle and a lot more deep discharges than a suburban vehicle sees.
"Has this vehicle towed?" is not a question the odometer answers, and the consequences sit in the battery rather than anywhere you would think to look.
