A large share of vehicles here do a very short trip to the station in the morning and then sit in an open commuter car park until evening.
The driving is almost irrelevant to the battery. Two kilometres barely touches the pack — shallow discharges are the gentlest thing a lithium battery experiences, and a vehicle used this way accumulates very few complete cycles even over years.
The parking is the part that matters. Nine hours in an uncovered car park through a south-western Sydney summer is a serious thermal load, repeated every working day. If the vehicle was also left at a high state of charge that morning, it is spending those nine hours hot and full — which is precisely the combination that accelerates permanent capacity loss.
So the counterintuitive result is that a low-kilometre station-commuter vehicle can age faster than its odometer suggests, and the cause is where it sits rather than how it is driven.
What to ask, and what it is worth
Two questions tell you most of what you need:
"Where did it park during the day?" A covered or basement space is a completely different thermal history from an open deck.
"What did you usually charge it to?" Most modern EVs offer a charge limit, commonly 80% for daily use. A vehicle kept in the middle of its range and parked in shade has had an easy life. One kept full and parked in sun has not.
Neither answer is in the advertisement, and a measurement settles what the answers only hint at.
