Sydney Olympic Park is unusual for an electric vehicle owner: it is one of the better-served parts of the city for public fast charging, and there is a large office and events population passing through it every day.

That produces a battery history you do not see in the suburbs — habitual DC fast charging by convenience rather than necessity.

Fast charging because it is there

In most of Sydney, people DC fast-charge when they have to: on a road trip, or because their building has no charger. Here, a fast charger is simply on the way, and a twenty-minute top-up while you do something else is easier than remembering to plug in at home.

Done occasionally, that is a non-event. A modern pack's thermal management is designed for DC charging and handles it well.

What accumulates is the pattern: several sessions a week, year after year, often in summer, often to a high state of charge. DC charging pushes very high current into the pack and generates real heat doing it, and repeated heat cycling is what permanently removes capacity.

Compare that with an identical vehicle trickling overnight on AC in a suburban garage, where the pack barely warms at all. Over four years those two vehicles have had genuinely different lives, and the difference shows up in a measurement and nowhere else.

What works in the other direction

Basement and multi-storey parking is thermally kind. A covered deck stays well below the temperature of an open driveway through a February afternoon, and heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss.

The driving is short and shallow. Local trips, low speeds, plenty of regeneration. Very few complete charge cycles accumulate.

So the picture is mixed in a specific way: hard charging, easy parking, gentle driving. Which dominates depends on the individual vehicle, and that is exactly the question a measurement answers.

Cell spread matters here

On a heavily fast-charged pack, individual cells are more likely to have drifted apart. A single State of Health figure hides that entirely — and those weaker cells are what determine how the vehicle behaves under load and how it ages from here. On a vehicle from a high-DC area, the spread reading is worth more than the headline number.
