Terrigal's EVs live an easy life by almost every measure that matters to a battery, and it shows up in the numbers.
The climate is genuinely kind. Directly on the coast, temperature-moderated by the ocean, without the run of extreme days the Sydney basin's western suburbs get. Since heat is the main driver of permanent lithium capacity loss, coastal Central Coast cars tend to sit at the healthier end of what is normal for their age.
The trips are short and shallow. Beach, shops, Erina Fair, school. A journey of a few kilometres barely touches the pack — shallow discharges are the gentlest thing you can do to a lithium battery, far gentler than the deep daily cycle a commuter takes. Terrigal cars accumulate very few complete cycles even over years.
The housing is mostly detached, mostly garaged. A car that sleeps under cover avoids the worst case of baking on an exposed driveway at a high state of charge through a February afternoon.
Where the easy life gets complicated
Two things cut the other way, and they are worth knowing about because they are invisible in a listing.
Low use is not the same as no ageing. A battery ages through cycling and through calendar time, and calendar ageing continues whether the car moves or not. It is driven mainly by temperature and by the state of charge the pack sits at. A garaged Terrigal car left plugged in at 100% every night for five years has spent a very long time at high cell voltage, and that permanently removes capacity. Most owners have never been told this — the fix is a charge limit of around 80% for daily use, which almost every modern EV offers.
Short trips flatter nothing on the dash. In winter a brief journey never warms the pack, so efficiency looks poor and regeneration is limited for the whole trip. The car's readouts understate its health. This is precisely why the measured figure matters more than the display.
