Thirroul's driving is unusual: short trips, steep terrain and one of the mildest coastal climates in the state. All three affect what you can and cannot conclude about a used EV here.
Short trips are kind to a pack and misleading on the dash. A journey of a few kilometres never brings the battery up to its optimum operating temperature, particularly in winter, so the car runs at reduced efficiency and limited regeneration for the whole trip. Energy consumption figures look poor. The pack itself is barely troubled — shallow discharges are the gentlest thing you can do to a lithium battery, far gentler than the deep daily cycle a commuter car takes.
So a Thirroul car's dashboard numbers tend to understate its health while its actual condition tends to be very good. That gap is exactly why we measure the pack rather than reading the display.
The climate is close to ideal. Directly on the coast, escarpment behind, ocean moderation in front. Thirroul does not get the extreme heat days that drive permanent capacity loss inland, and it cools down properly overnight. Cars that have genuinely lived in the northern Illawarra their whole lives frequently sit at the top of the normal range for their age.
The terrain is the third factor. Bulli Pass, Lawrence Hargrave Drive and the Sea Cliff Bridge run mean constant elevation change. Climbing draws sustained current; descending recovers it through regeneration. It is a distinctive duty cycle and a benign one, but it makes efficiency readouts here almost useless as a health indicator.
What to ask a seller
Whether the car has done the Sydney commute, where it parked overnight, and what it was routinely charged to. Those three answers tell you more about the battery than the odometer does — and a measurement tells you more than all four.
