The Sydney commute question
A large number of Illawarra EVs do the run up to Sydney — Mount Ousley, the M1, and back again. That is a long, fast, sustained-speed commute, and it is harder on an electric car's real-world consumption than almost any other kind of driving.
Two practical consequences.
Highway consumption is the number that matters here. An EV's efficiency falls at sustained highway speed, so a capacity loss that would be invisible on suburban driving becomes noticeable on the commute. If you are buying a car to do that trip, the question is not whether the battery is healthy in general — it is whether what is left covers Wollongong to Sydney and back with a margin you are comfortable with, in winter, with the heater on.
Commuter cars have cycled hard. A daily Sydney run is a deep discharge and a full recharge, most days. That is many more full-equivalent cycles than the odometer implies, and cycles age a battery more than distance does.
The escarpment climb
Anyone living above the escarpment adds a sustained climb to every trip home. Like the Blue Mountains, that means high sustained draw on the way up and regeneration on the way down. It is not damaging, but it is a distinctive duty cycle and worth testing rather than assuming.
