The used EV market in the upper mountains is thin. There simply are not many electric cars for sale up here, so most people buy in Penrith, Parramatta or further into Sydney and drive the vehicle home.
That produces a fact worth taking seriously: a large share of mountains EVs did not spend their early life in the mountains.
The first summers count most
Battery degradation is front-loaded. A lithium pack loses capacity fastest in its first couple of years and then the curve flattens considerably. The conditions during that early period therefore carry more weight than the same conditions later on.
Heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss. A vehicle that spent its first three summers on an uncovered driveway in western Sydney has already banked most of the degradation it is going to bank — and moving it to Wentworth Falls afterwards does not give any of that back. The pack will age more slowly from here. It does not reset.
Two vehicles sitting in mountains driveways today, same model, same year, same odometer, can therefore be in quite different condition depending on where each of them started. Neither owner did anything wrong, and neither one can tell you.
What you can actually find out
Ask where the vehicle was first registered and where it lived before. Service history sometimes shows the servicing dealer's location, which is a reasonable proxy. Sellers usually answer straight.
Then measure it, because the seller's answer tells you about the risk and the measurement tells you about the outcome.
What Wentworth Falls does from here
Once a vehicle is up here, the environment is kind. Summers are mild by Sydney standards, nights cool down properly, the tree cover is heavy and most housing has a garage or carport. Heat is the enemy and there is comparatively little of it.
The cold is a separate matter and it is not damage — it changes what the battery will deliver on a winter morning without changing how much capacity it actually has. We have set that out in full on our Blackheath page.
Range matters more up here
Charging is sparser than in the metropolitan area and the trips are longer. A used EV claiming 450 km that has lost 15% of its capacity is a 380 km vehicle in perfect conditions and less on a cold morning with the heater running — which is exactly the morning you have.
