Wetherill Park is one of the largest industrial precincts in New South Wales, and the electric vehicles here are working vehicles — vans, utes and light trucks doing deliveries, trades and logistics six days a week.
A working EV's battery ages differently from a family car's, and almost nothing written about EV battery health accounts for it.
Payload is a battery question
An electric van carrying 800 kg of stock uses substantially more energy per kilometre than the same van empty. More energy per kilometre means more complete charge cycles for the same distance travelled — and it is cycles, not kilometres, that age a lithium pack.
So a loaded van with 60,000 km on it has put more energy through its battery than an unloaded one with 80,000 km. The odometer understates the work, and it understates it more the heavier the vehicle runs.
The same applies to a ute with a full tray, a tool body, or a trailer behind it. If the vehicle earns its living carrying things, its battery has done more than the dash suggests.
Depot charging is the other half
Commercial operators charge to a schedule, not to a battery's preference. That usually means:
- DC fast charging at the depot, because a vehicle earning money cannot sit on AC for eight hours
- Charging to 100% every night, so the driver never starts a shift short
- Plugging in immediately after a shift, while the pack is still hot from the day's work
Each of those is individually manageable. Together, done daily for three years, they are the hardest realistic treatment a modern pack receives. Charging a hot battery is worse than charging a cool one, and holding it at 100% overnight in a western Sydney summer compounds it.
None of this is abuse and none of it voids anything. It is simply a harder life, and it is why an ex-commercial EV should be priced and inspected as an ex-commercial EV rather than as a low-odometer bargain.
The warranty point that catches buyers out
Several manufacturers treat commercial use differently. Toyota's bZ4X capacity cover excludes commercial use outright, naming taxi, hire and rideshare. GWM caps commercial vehicles at 150,000 km where private owners get unlimited kilometres. Toyota and Lexus hybrid cover drops to 160,000 km for commercial vehicles instead of unlimited.
If you are buying an ex-fleet vehicle, the cover you assume you are inheriting may not exist. Check the terms for the brand before you price it.
