Winmalee is residential in a way that shapes its cars: large blocks, garages, a single road in and out, and very little through traffic. The EVs here are household cars, charged at home, parked under cover, and used either for a long commute or for very little at all.

The interesting question in a suburb like this is what a low odometer is actually worth.

A used EV with 38,000 km on a six-year-old car reads well in a listing, and buyers pay for it. But a battery ages two ways at once: through cycling, which tracks kilometres, and through calendar ageing, which happens regardless of whether the car moves. Calendar ageing is driven mainly by temperature and by the state of charge the pack sits at, and a garaged car that has been plugged in and charged to 100% every night for six years has been sitting at high voltage for a very long time.

So a low-kilometre car is usually in better shape than a high-kilometre one of the same age — but not always, and not by as much as the odometer implies. This is one of the clearest cases where measuring changes a purchase decision, because the number people are paying a premium for is not the number that determines what they are getting.

What we typically see locally

Winmalee's thermal environment is good. It sits high enough on the ridge to escape the Nepean's worst heat, the tree canopy is heavy, and almost everything is garaged. Cars that have genuinely lived here tend to measure well.

The exceptions are cars bought elsewhere and brought up. Where a car spent its first few summers matters more than where it lives now, and a car's early life is not written anywhere you can read it.
