The current MG HS Super Hybrid carries a 24.7 kWh battery and claims 120 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle — a large pack for the segment, and an honest test standard. What MG does not offer is a capacity guarantee: the 7-year, 150,000 km warranty covers defects, and publishes no percentage below which MG will act.

Credit where due: MG quotes WLTP, not NEDC, so the 120 km figure is more believable than the NEDC ranges quoted by some rivals. Expect real-world electric driving in the 90–100 km region in mixed use.

An earlier plug-in HS — badged HS Plus EV — was sold from 2021 with a smaller pack and a much shorter electric range. It is a different battery under different, older MG warranty terms, and the two should not be confused in listings.

What "no capacity guarantee" means on a plug-in

A PHEV pack does something close to a full cycle every day it is plugged in. That is the duty cycle that ages a lithium battery fastest. On a car with a 70% floor, gradual loss beyond that is the manufacturer's problem inside the warranty period. On the HS, gradual loss is — on the published terms — not a defect, so it is yours.

That does not make the car a bad buy. It makes a dated, independent measurement of the pack the only benchmark you will have, and it makes the previous owner's charging pattern a real part of the price. Full terms: MG battery warranty in Australia.

What the assessment covers

The pack's reported State of Health, cell-group voltage spread, temperature behaviour and any stored or pending high-voltage fault codes. On a plug-in, the spread between cell groups is the earliest signal of a pack that is ageing unevenly.

What to check before you buy

  • Which HS plug-in — the current Super Hybrid or the earlier HS Plus EV

  • Measured State of Health and cell voltage spread, with no published floor to lean on

  • First registration date, which decides which MG terms apply

  • How often it was charged — daily deep cycling is the hardest life for this pack
