If you are buying a used Camry Hybrid, find out whether it was built before or after August 2020, because Toyota changed the battery at that point for Australian-market cars — from a 245-volt nickel-metal-hydride pack to a 259-volt lithium-ion one, fitted in the same space under the rear seat.
From the driver's seat you would never know. It changes two things that matter to an owner.
Why the changeover matters
Repair options. Australia's hybrid battery repair and remanufacturing industry was built around nickel-metal-hydride. Module-level repair is routine, individual modules are available from around $40, and reconditioned packs are widely published at $1,500–$1,650 for 40 and 50-series Camrys. Injectronics' national exchange program launched NiMH-only.
For the lithium-ion cars, that ecosystem is much thinner. Fewer workshops, fewer reconditioned packs, fewer cheap paths.
Cost if it goes wrong. Toyota Australia has publicly quoted the latest Camry Hybrid traction battery at approximately $3,280 excluding GST for the part, with labour on top. That is the only genuine Toyota battery price directly attributable to Toyota Australia, and it is considerably lower than some third-party claims about genuine pricing — see what a hybrid battery actually costs in Australia for why those numbers disagree.
So: the older NiMH car has cheaper and more numerous repair paths. The newer Li-ion car has a newer battery but fewer options if it does need attention. Neither is straightforwardly better — it is a genuine trade-off, and almost nobody selling a Camry will raise it.
What normal looks like
Australian sources converge on 8 to 10 years, or roughly 160,000 to 200,000 kilometres for a hybrid traction battery, with a fault typically appearing once health falls to around 70 per cent — and that fault is usually caused by a small number of weak modules rather than whole-pack decline.
A Camry is a workhorse. Many are ex-fleet, ex-taxi or ex-rideshare, which means high kilometres and a very large number of charge cycles relative to age. A five-year-old Camry with 250,000 km has worked far harder than a ten-year-old one with 90,000 km, and the battery knows it.
What to check before you buy
Build date against August 2020, which determines the chemistry, the repair options and the likely cost of any future work
Module or block voltage spread, which is where a developing problem shows first
Whether the car was used commercially — taxi, hire or rideshare use caps Toyota's warranty at 160,000 km rather than unlimited, and a used buyer inherits that
The cooling intake near the rear seat, for dust and lint blockage
Stored and pending fault codes, including ones that have not yet lit the dash
On the test drive
Watch the charge gauge for rapid swings. Listen for constant fan noise from the rear. Note whether the engine shuts off at rest and whether the car creeps on electric power in a car park. Ask to see recent fuel records — a Camry Hybrid running well above its claim with no other explanation is worth investigating.
