Most comparisons of these two are about running costs. This one is about the battery, because that is the part of the decision people get wrong.

The risk is a different size

On a used hybrid, the traction battery is small and works within a narrow charge window. When it fails, it usually fails at module level, and Australia has a well-developed repair and reconditioning industry — particularly for nickel-metal-hydride packs. Australian workshops publish roughly $1,200–$2,700 reconditioned and $2,500–$5,500 for a new aftermarket pack fitted for common models. Cell-level repair runs roughly $800–$1,400.

On a used EV, the battery is most of the car's value. It is also far less likely to fail outright — modern EV packs are actively cooled, conservatively managed, and usually covered by a capacity warranty of eight years or more. What happens instead is gradual capacity loss, which is not a failure and usually not claimable, but does directly reduce what the car is worth and what it can do.

Hybrid: a smaller, more likely, more fixable problem. EV: a larger, less likely, less fixable one.

The plug-in hybrid exception

Plug-in hybrids sit between the two and inherit the worst of both. The battery is larger than a hybrid's and works harder per kilowatt-hour, and replacement costs are in EV territory — Mitsubishi Australia quotes $12,000–$13,000 for a pre-2022 Outlander PHEV and $15,000–$16,000 RRP for 2022 onwards, which is frequently more than the car is worth.

Meanwhile Volkswagen and Cupra state explicitly that capacity reduction on their plug-in hybrids is not a defect, and BMW gives its PHEVs 6 years or 100,000 km against 8 years or 160,000 km for its EVs.

The counterintuitive bit about age

On hybrids, the older car often has better repair economics. Australia's module-repair industry was built around nickel-metal-hydride, and the newer lithium-ion hybrids have far fewer cheap options today. Toyota switched the Camry in August 2020, the Corolla in 2023 and the C-HR in 2024.

So a 2018 NiMH Camry Hybrid has a cheaper worst case than a 2023 lithium one, even though the 2023 car's battery is far newer and far less likely to need anything.

How to decide

Work out the worst case for the specific car, not the category. On a NiMH hybrid that is one to three thousand dollars, possibly avoidable with a module repair, and probably years away. On a mainstream EV it is gradual capacity loss you can measure today and price accordingly. On a PHEV it can be more than the car is worth.

Then measure the battery on whichever you choose, because in all three cases the individual car varies more than the category does.
