Why a stepped guarantee changes the conversation
With a single 70%-at-8-years floor, a three-year-old car reading 80% is inside warranty but you have no idea whether that is normal. With Volkswagen's curve you do: 80% at three years is only two points above the 78% threshold, and a car that has already used most of its allowance is a car to price accordingly.
