The Eastern Suburbs have among the highest EV adoption rates in Sydney and a used-car profile unlike anywhere else in the city: short trips, street parking, and salt air.
What the local pattern does to a battery
Short trips are gentle on a pack. A car doing 8 km to the beach and back is barely discharging the battery. Shallow cycles are far kinder than deep ones, and cycles age a lithium battery more than distance does. A five-year-old Eastern Suburbs EV with 40,000 km has often done remarkably little real work.
Street parking is the offsetting factor. Terrace and apartment living here means a lot of cars live permanently on the street, uncovered. That is more thermal exposure than a garage, though the coastal position keeps peak temperatures well below western Sydney.
Salt air is not a battery issue. It matters for the body, the underbody and connectors, but the pack itself is sealed. Worth having a mechanical inspection look at corrosion — it is not what a battery test covers, and we would rather say so.
The net result is that Eastern Suburbs EVs often measure well for their age. Which makes it more important, not less, to check — because "low kilometres in a good suburb" is exactly the car people pay a premium for, and the premium should be justified by a figure rather than an assumption.
