Dapto sits back from the coast behind Lake Illawarra, and that distance from the water is worth more than it looks. The ocean moderation that keeps Wollongong and Thirroul mild weakens as you move inland, and Dapto's summer afternoons run warmer than the coastal strip a few kilometres east.
Heat is the main driver of permanent capacity loss in a lithium battery — more than kilometres, more than age. It is not dramatic on any single day. It accumulates over summers. A car that has spent four Februarys in Dapto has had a slightly harder thermal life than an identical car in Thirroul, and over several years that compounds into a measurable difference.
Slightly, not drastically. This is still the Illawarra, not the western plains — Dapto does not do what Penrith does. But the difference is real, and it is the kind of thing that shows up in a measurement and nowhere else.
The fleet and trade factor
Dapto and the surrounding industrial corridor put a lot of commercial and fleet vehicles on the road, and fleet cars have a distinctive battery history: high annual distances, frequent DC fast charging because time matters more than cost, and often multiple drivers with no shared charging habits.
DC fast charging is not inherently bad for a modern pack — the thermal management is designed for it — but doing it repeatedly, at high states of charge, in summer, is the combination that adds up. A three-year-old ex-fleet EV can be an excellent buy at the price. It can also have done more to its battery than a private car twice its age.
