Wollongong has one of the better climates in New South Wales for an electric car, and one of the harder commutes. Both are worth knowing before you read anything into a used EV here.
The climate first. Coastal Illawarra is temperature-moderated by the ocean in a way the Sydney basin is not. Summer peaks are lower, the overnight cool-down is faster and reliable, and the run of extreme days that western Sydney gets simply does not happen here at the same frequency. Since heat is the primary driver of permanent lithium capacity loss, a car that has spent its life in Wollongong has had a materially easier thermal environment than the same car in Penrith or Blacktown.
That shows up in measurements. Illawarra cars frequently sit at the better end of what is normal for their age.
The commute is the other side. A large number of Wollongong EVs do the run to Sydney — up Mount Ousley, onto the M1, and back again. That is a long, fast, sustained-speed journey, which is exactly where an electric car is least efficient, and it usually means a deep discharge and a full recharge most working days. Complete charge cycles age a pack more than kilometres do.
And the climb is real. Mount Ousley is a sustained ascent under load, which draws high continuous current from the pack and generates heat doing it. Coming home, the descent puts a lot of that energy back through regenerative braking. Neither is damaging — this is exactly what the drivetrain is designed for — but it is a distinctive duty cycle, and a commuter car here has worked harder than its odometer suggests.
What that means if you are buying
The mild climate and the hard commute pull in opposite directions, and which one dominates depends entirely on the individual car. A Wollongong EV that has never left the Illawarra is usually an excellent buy. One that has done four years on the M1 is a different proposition — often still fine, but not something to assume.
Ask what the car was used for. Then measure it, because the seller may not know and the dashboard will not tell either of you.
