Emu Plains sits at the foot of the mountains on the western bank of the Nepean, and it occupies an awkward position that is worth being straight about.
People treat it as a mountains suburb. For a battery it behaves like Penrith.
The climate does not start at the bridge
The cooling effect of the Blue Mountains comes from elevation, and Emu Plains has almost none of it. It sits on the floodplain, flat, inland, with no sea breeze reaching it — and along with Penrith and Richmond it is part of the corner of the Sydney basin that records the region's highest summer temperatures.
The climb starts at Lapstone, a couple of kilometres further on. Everything before it is the plain.
Heat is the primary driver of permanent lithium capacity loss — ahead of distance, ahead of age — so this matters more than the postcode suggests. A vehicle that has spent four or five summers here has had a materially harder thermal life than one from Springwood, let alone Katoomba.
Why buyers get this wrong
A used listing that says "Blue Mountains car, always garaged" reads as a cooler, gentler history than the same vehicle advertised in Penrith. In Emu Plains' case those two vehicles have lived in effectively the same climate.
That is not a seller being dishonest. Most owners have never been told that heat is what ages a battery, let alone where the temperature gradient actually begins.
What makes the real difference here
Where it slept. Housing is predominantly freestanding with driveways, carports and garages in a mix. A garage is a genuinely effective mitigation — it removes the worst case of a dark vehicle in direct sun at a high state of charge. That difference is larger than anything the suburb boundary does.
Whether it was kept full. High state of charge plus high temperature is the combination that ages a nickel-chemistry pack fastest, and they happen together on a hot driveway. On LFP vehicles — BYD, and Tesla's Standard Range and RWD models — a regular full charge is actually recommended, so the identical habit reads completely differently. Establish the chemistry before judging the habit.
