Helensburgh sits on top of the escarpment at the northern tip of the Illawarra, and it has a distinction no other town down here shares: Sydney is often the closer commute.
That, plus a long history of shift work in the area, gives the local vehicle population a pattern of its own.
Two commutes, both long
Households here split between the run north into Sydney and the run south down the pass into Wollongong. Both are genuine distances, both are largely at sustained speed, and both involve serious elevation change.
Sustained highway speed is where an electric vehicle is least efficient. Aerodynamic drag rises steeply above about 80 km/h, and a free-flowing motorway offers almost no braking to regenerate from. A commute that looks like 80 km round trip consumes considerably more than 80 km of suburban driving would, and it typically means a deep discharge and a full recharge most working days.
Complete charge cycles age a lithium pack more than kilometres do. So a Helensburgh commuter's odometer understates the work its battery has done, whichever direction it commutes.
The descent is the compensation. Coming home down the pass, or dropping off the escarpment into Wollongong, regenerative braking puts a meaningful amount back. It also means that if the pack is near full at the top there is nowhere for that energy to go, regen is reduced, and the vehicle falls back on friction brakes — which is why some local drivers find their brake pads wear differently from other EV owners'.
Shift work changes the charging pattern
Rotating rosters make routine hard. Where a nine-to-five household plugs in at the same time every night, shift work means charging whenever it is convenient — sometimes not for days, sometimes to 100% before a long stretch away from a charger, sometimes immediately after a long run while the pack is still warm.
None of that is damaging on its own. It does mean the charging history is less consistent than average, and it makes "what did you usually charge it to?" a weaker question here than elsewhere. The measurement is more informative than the owner's account.
The environment is kind
Escarpment-top, heavily treed, close enough to the coast for real temperature moderation, and without the run of extreme days the western suburbs get. Heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss, and there is comparatively little of it here.
