The Upper North Shore is one of the better environments in Sydney for an electric car battery, and the reasons are worth understanding because they are the same reasons a car from here often justifies its asking price.

Why these cars tend to measure well

Cooler temperatures. The bushland and elevation keep the Upper North Shore consistently below the western suburbs through summer. Heat is the main driver of capacity loss, so this matters more than it sounds.

Garaging is close to universal. Large blocks, freestanding homes, garages. Cars here are sheltered.

Home charging dominates. Off-street parking and high solar uptake mean most charging is slow AC overnight — materially gentler on a pack than repeated DC fast charging.

That combination produces a good base rate. It also means a car from this area that measures poorly is telling you something specific about that vehicle rather than about the suburb, which is useful information in itself.

The commute variable

Commutes from Hornsby to the city or across to Macquarie Park are long, and the daily distance is real. On an EV that means regular deep cycles, and cycles age a battery more than kilometres do.
