Hurstville is one of the most apartment-dense centres in southern Sydney, surrounded by established freestanding housing in Kogarah, Bexley, Penshurst and Mortdale. That gives the area two quite different car populations within a few kilometres.
Basement versus driveway, again
An apartment basement is thermally stable and shaded — one of the better places a battery can spend a Sydney summer. A driveway two suburbs over is more exposed.
Southern Sydney is milder than the west, so the difference is less stark than it would be in Penrith. But five summers is still five summers, and it shows.
The hybrid factor
The St George area has a substantial population of older hybrids — Camrys, Prius, Corollas from the nickel-metal-hydride era, often second or third-owner cars with genuine kilometres.
Those need a different assessment from a late-model EV. A hybrid traction battery usually fails at module level rather than as a whole pack, and Australian remanufacturers report that packs condemned as faulty often still hold 70 per cent or more of their capacity. The practical implication: a hybrid with a warning light may need a module repair rather than a new battery, and knowing which before anyone quotes you is worth real money.
