Kiama is the point where the Illawarra thins out and the south coast begins, and for an electric car that changes the calculation. A used EV with a claimed 450 km that has quietly lost 15% of its capacity is a 380 km car in perfect conditions and rather less on the Princes Highway at 100 km/h with the air conditioning running.
For most suburban buyers that gap is an inconvenience. In Kiama, where the nearest fast charger may not be where you want it, it is the difference between a car that suits your life and one that does not.
What Kiama does to a battery
The climate is kind — coastal, moderated, without the extreme heat days that drive permanent capacity loss inland. Housing is predominantly detached with garages and carports. Home charging overnight on AC is the norm, which is the gentlest charging profile there is.
The counterweight is the driving. Long highway runs at sustained speed, often with a full charge before setting off and a deep discharge by the time you are back. That is genuine cycling, and cycling is what ages a pack.
