Shellharbour and Shell Cove are among the fastest-growing residential areas in the Illawarra, and the EV fleet here reflects that: relatively new cars, bought new or near-new, in households that commute a long way.

Three local factors genuinely change what we find.

The commute is longer than Wollongong's. Shellharbour to Sydney is a serious daily run, and even Shellharbour to Wollongong adds up over a working week. Long, fast, motorway driving is the least efficient thing an electric car does, and it usually means a deep discharge and a full recharge most days. Charge cycles age a pack faster than kilometres do, so a Shellharbour commuter car has done more work than an equivalent odometer reading elsewhere implies.

The estates are open. Newer subdivisions have less mature tree cover than established suburbs, and a lot of cars park on exposed driveways rather than in garages. A dark car sitting on an uncovered driveway through a February afternoon gets considerably hotter than one under a carport — and if it is sitting there at 100% charge, that is the worst combination for a lithium pack. High state of charge plus heat is what accelerates permanent capacity loss.

The coast helps. Against all that, Shell Cove and Shellharbour are close enough to the water to get the same ocean moderation the rest of the Illawarra enjoys. The peaks are lower and the nights cool down properly. The local climate is still one of the better ones in the state for a battery.

The practical upshot

A Shellharbour EV's condition depends heavily on habits rather than location — where it parked, what it was charged to overnight, and whether it did the Sydney run. Those are exactly the things a seller may not think to mention and a buyer has no way to verify.
