Miranda is the commercial centre of the Sutherland Shire and carries a substantial share of the area's dealership stock. If you are buying a used electric or hybrid vehicle south of the river, there is a reasonable chance it is sitting on a lot here.

The thing nobody discloses

A used EV's largest single variable is the condition of its battery, and it appears nowhere. The odometer does not describe it. The service history rarely mentions it. The dashboard range estimate is a prediction built from recent driving efficiency, not a measurement of capacity — it moves with weather, speed and load, which means it can read reassuringly on a vehicle that has lost real capacity and alarmingly on one that is fine.

The gap between a pack at 92% and one at 78% on the same model is worth thousands at resale and a meaningful slice of usable range every day. Neither figure is visible to you, and often neither is visible to the seller.

Asking a dealer, and when

Ask before you are deep in a deal rather than after. Once you are in the finance office the leverage has moved, and a request that would have been routine an hour earlier now reads as an attempt to renegotiate.

Some dealers will offer you their own battery report instead. That is worth having, and it is worth knowing it was produced by the party selling the vehicle. An independent, dated figure with a certificate anyone can verify is a different thing.

A dealer confident in their stock usually agrees readily. One who refuses a short, read-only, buyer-funded check has answered a question for you.

What actually happens

The read is non-invasive. Nothing is written to the vehicle, no settings change, nothing is dismantled. The vehicle does not move. It takes minutes, and you get the written report at the vehicle with a numbered certificate.

We attend dealership forecourts and private sellers' addresses across the Shire, and it does not need to be a production.

What we see locally

Shire vehicles are generally well kept — garaged, coastal, moderate use. That makes them a good place to buy and it makes the premium real, which is exactly why the premium should be justified by a figure rather than an impression.
