North Sydney's car population is distinctive because of how the cars were acquired: a high proportion of novated leases and company vehicles, many now reaching the end of three or four-year terms and entering the used market.

What an ex-lease EV looks like

Ex-lease cars are usually well presented, fully serviced and honestly described. What that does not tell you is how the battery was used.

  • Lease terms encourage distance. A novated lease typically comes with a generous kilometre allowance, and drivers use it.

  • Charging is often mixed. Some lease drivers charge at home, many charge at the office or on the road, and workplace charging is frequently DC.

  • The driver did not own the car. That is not an accusation — it simply means the incentive to preserve long-term battery condition was weaker than for an owner planning to keep the car for a decade.

None of that makes an ex-lease EV a poor buy. They are often very good value precisely because they come to market in volume. It means the odometer and the service book are not the whole picture, and the battery is the part nobody has looked at.
