Smithfield sits in the middle of Sydney's largest industrial belt, and it has a combination that is unusually hard on a battery: western Sydney heat, and almost no shade anywhere.
Concrete, steel and no canopy
An industrial estate is mostly hardstand — concrete, asphalt, steel sheds and parking bays with nothing over them. There is very little tree canopy, and the surfaces store heat through the afternoon and release it into the evening.
The practical effect is that a vehicle parked on an industrial yard through a February day gets hotter, and stays hotter for longer, than the same vehicle on a suburban street with a tree over it. Cabin and pack temperatures in a dark vehicle on open concrete can sit well above the air temperature for hours.
Heat is the primary driver of permanent lithium capacity loss — ahead of distance, ahead of age. It does not announce itself on any single day. It accumulates across summers.
What that means when buying locally
A vehicle that has spent three or four summers parked on an open yard in Smithfield has had a genuinely harder thermal life than one garaged in the Blue Mountains, even if both show the same odometer reading and the same service history.
It also means the variation between individual vehicles around here is wide. Where a vehicle slept — shed, carport, open yard, street — matters more than the suburb average, and it is a fair question to ask a seller. Most will answer honestly because most have never been told it matters.
Passively-cooled packs have no defence
Worth singling out: the Nissan LEAF has no liquid thermal management. It cannot actively cool its battery — it can only wait for heat to leave. In an environment like this, that difference shows up in the measured numbers more than anywhere else in Sydney.
That is not a reason to avoid a LEAF. It is a reason that on a LEAF, more than any other model, the individual vehicle's history matters far more than the model average.
