Green Square is among the newest high-density precincts in Australia, and its electric vehicles have a profile that is close to the opposite of a commuter car.

Newer buildings, better charging

Unlike the older apartment stock elsewhere in Sydney, buildings here are recent enough that many were designed with electric vehicles in mind — basement charging provisioned from the start rather than retrofitted into a switchboard that was never sized for it.

Where that is the case, the charging history is excellent: slow AC, overnight, in a cool basement. That is the gentlest treatment a pack receives, and it is why well-kept vehicles from precincts like this frequently measure at the top of the normal band for their age.

But these cars barely move

Green Square is walkable, well served by transport and close to the city. A large share of households here own a car for weekends and occasional trips rather than for commuting, and it sits in the basement for days or weeks between uses.

Standing still is not neutral for a lithium battery, and this is the part almost nobody is told.

A battery ages two ways at once. Cycling tracks energy through the pack — roughly, kilometres. Calendar ageing happens whether the vehicle moves or not, and it is driven mainly by temperature and by the state of charge the pack sits at. A cell held at a high voltage ages faster than one held mid-range, permanently.

So a vehicle plugged in and charged to 100% the moment it returns, then left for a fortnight, has spent most of its life at high voltage. The identical vehicle left at 50-60% between uses has aged measurably less.

Almost every modern EV has a charge limit setting. For a car that mostly sits, keeping it around 50-60% and topping up before a longer trip is materially kinder than keeping it full.

The exception is LFP — BYD, and Tesla's Standard Range and RWD models — where a periodic full charge is actually recommended, because the battery management system needs one to recalibrate against a very flat voltage curve. Establish the chemistry before you judge the habit.

What that means if you are buying

A low-kilometre Green Square car is often genuinely excellent and occasionally quietly tired, and the odometer does not distinguish them. That gap is exactly where a measurement changes what a vehicle is worth.
