The Sorento PHEV carries a 14.0 kWh battery in a seven-seat SUV weighing around two tonnes, and Kia guarantees it to 70% capacity for 7 years or 150,000 km, transferable. That guarantee is the important part. Most plug-in hybrids in Australia have none, and on a family car that will be plugged in nightly and run flat most days, it is worth a great deal.

The pack

We have deliberately not published an electric range. The figures in circulation for this car are quoted on different cycles by different sources and we could not tie one to an Australian Kia specification. A small pack in a heavy car delivers a modest electric range; how modest depends on load, speed and air-conditioning, all of which a seven-seater sees plenty of.

Why a small pack in a big car ages faster

A 14 kWh pack moving a two-tonne SUV does a full cycle most days it is plugged in, and it is asked for high power relative to its size every time the car accelerates. That is a heavier duty than a larger pack in a smaller car. The arithmetic is what it is: more full cycles per year than almost any EV, in a vehicle that carries a family.

The 70% floor turns that from a worry into a measurable question. Kia's terms apply to its plug-in hybrids as well as its EVs, and they transfer. Full terms: Kia battery warranty in Australia.

What the assessment covers

The pack's reported State of Health, the voltage spread between cell groups, temperature behaviour and any stored or pending high-voltage fault codes. Cell spread is the early signal on a plug-in — it moves before range does.

What to check before you buy

  • Measured State of Health against the published 70% floor

  • Cell voltage spread

  • Charging pattern — nightly plug-in means many full cycles; never plugged in means a heavy hybrid that carried a battery it didn't use

  • Odometer against 150,000 km, which a family SUV can reach inside seven years
