If you read one page on this site before buying a used plug-in hybrid, make it this one.

Mitsubishi Australia's own quoted figures for an Outlander PHEV traction battery are $12,000–$13,000 for pre-2022 cars and $15,000–$16,000 RRP from 2022 onwards. On a used Outlander PHEV, that is frequently more than the vehicle is worth.

There is no other mainstream used car in Australia where a single component can exceed the value of the whole thing quite so comfortably.

Why a PHEV battery is the worst of both worlds

A conventional hybrid has a small pack that works in a narrow charge window and rarely goes deep. An EV has a large pack that is conservatively managed with a big buffer at each end.

A plug-in hybrid has neither advantage. The pack is large enough to be expensive, small enough that it gets cycled deeply and often, and it does full charge-discharge cycles most days in normal use — which is exactly what ages a battery fastest.

And unlike a hybrid, Australia's cheap module-repair ecosystem does not extend here. The reconditioning industry was built around nickel-metal-hydride Toyota and Lexus packs. There is no equivalent for a PHEV.

What Mitsubishi does and does not guarantee

Mitsubishi covers the drive battery for 8 years or 160,000 km on vehicles bought after 1 October 2020.

On capacity, Mitsubishi's Drive Battery Capacity Care Program guarantees at least 66% of useable energy capacity — but it applies to MY22 and later Outlander PHEV only. It does not apply to pre-2022 Outlander PHEVs or to the Eclipse Cross PHEV.

So if you are looking at a 2019, 2020 or 2021 Outlander PHEV — which is most of what is on the used market — there is no capacity guarantee at all, and the replacement figure is $12,000–$13,000.

What this means in practice

A used Outlander PHEV can be a genuinely good buy. They are practical, the electric range covers most daily driving, and depreciation has already done its worst.

But the downside case is unlike anything else in the segment. On a NiMH Camry Hybrid the worst case is one to three thousand dollars and possibly a module repair. Here it is five times that, with no cheap path.

A $249 assessment on a car where the battery risk is $15,000 is not a nice-to-have. It is the most proportionate money you will spend in the entire purchase.

What to check before you buy

  • Model year against MY22, which determines whether any capacity guarantee exists at all

  • Purchase date against 1 October 2020, which determines the 8-year/160,000 km cover

  • Measured condition of the pack, and module or block voltage spread

  • How the car was actually used — a PHEV that was never plugged in has run as a heavy, thirsty hybrid; one plugged in daily has done a full cycle most days. Both are hard on it in different ways.

  • Stored and pending fault codes, including ones that have not yet lit the dash

Ask the plug-in question directly

Ask the seller how often they charged it. If the answer is "hardly ever", the battery has seen fewer cycles but the car has spent its life carrying a large battery it never used — and you should reconsider whether you want a PHEV at all rather than a conventional hybrid.

If the answer is "every night", the pack has done a lot of full cycles for its age. Neither answer is disqualifying. Both change what you should pay.
