The C-HR is a small, light hybrid that generally has an easy life — mostly urban, rarely loaded, seldom towing. Its battery reflects that.

The thing to know is the 2024 changeover. First-generation C-HR Hybrids, roughly 2020 to 2023, use a nickel-metal-hydride pack. The second generation from 2024 uses lithium-ion — CarExpert describes it as a 4.08Ah lithium-ion pack replacing "the old nickel metal hydride unit."

Why that matters

For the NiMH cars, Australia's repair ecosystem is mature: module-level repair is routine, individual modules are cheap, and reconditioned and aftermarket packs are widely published for equivalent Toyotas at roughly $1,200–$3,500.

For the 2024-onward lithium cars, that ecosystem is thinner today. The battery is newer and has done far fewer cycles, so the question is less pressing — but the cheap paths that exist for the older car may not exist for yours if it ever needs anything.

This is the recurring counterintuitive point in used hybrid buying: the older car often has the better repair economics, not the worse.

What normal looks like

8 to 10 years or roughly 160,000 to 200,000 kilometres is the Australian consensus for hybrid traction battery life, with a fault typically appearing around 70 per cent health, triggered by a few weak modules rather than uniform decline.

A C-HR's light, urban life is gentle by hybrid standards. Most examples on the used market should be entirely unremarkable.

On the test drive

  • Charge gauge swinging rapidly between nearly full and nearly empty — the most useful single tell

  • The engine running more than it should, including refusing to shut off at rest

  • No or minimal electric creep in a car park

  • Loud or constant fan noise from the rear — check the intake for blockage

  • Fuel consumption well above the claim with no other explanation

What to check before you buy

  • Model year against 2024, which determines chemistry and repair economics

  • Module or block voltage spread

  • The cooling intake

  • Stored and pending fault codes

  • Service history, including annual Traction Battery Health Checks if extended cover is claimed
