The Corolla Hybrid is the sensible end of the used hybrid market — plentiful, cheap to run and generally well looked after. There is one split in the range worth understanding before you buy.
Australian Corolla Hybrids from 2016 to 2022 use a nickel-metal-hydride pack. From 2023, with the fifth-generation hybrid system, Toyota fitted a newly developed lithium-ion battery, reported as reducing weight by around 14 per cent.
Why that split matters to your wallet
Nickel-metal-hydride is what Australia's hybrid repair industry is built around. For a NiMH Corolla, module-level repair is routine, individual modules are available from around $40, and published reconditioned and aftermarket prices for equivalent NiMH Toyotas run roughly $1,200 to $3,500 depending on route. Injectronics' national exchange program launched NiMH-only.
For the 2023-onward lithium cars, those options are thinner today. The battery is newer and has done far fewer cycles, so the question is less urgent — but if it ever does need attention, the cheap paths that exist for the older car may not exist for yours.
This is the counterintuitive part of used hybrid buying: the older car often has the better repair economics.
What's normal
Typical Australian expectations are 8 to 10 years or roughly 160,000 to 200,000 kilometres, with a fault triggering around 70 per cent health — and the trigger is usually a few weak modules rather than uniform decline. A well-kept NiMH Corolla Hybrid from 2018 with 120,000 km should be entirely unremarkable.
Corollas tend to live gentler lives than Camrys — fewer fleet cars, fewer taxis, more private owners doing moderate kilometres. That generally shows in the battery.
What actually fails
Individual modules first. Then the cooling system — the intake near the rear seat blocks with dust and lint, the pack runs hot, and cells degrade unevenly. Toyota signals this with "Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts." Then the battery ECU, then connector corrosion.
P0A80 is the code most associated with a condemned pack.
On the test drive
Watch for the charge gauge swinging rapidly between nearly full and nearly empty. Check that the engine shuts off at rest and that the car creeps on electric power in a car park. Listen for constant fan noise from the rear. Compare recent fuel consumption against the claim.

Stored and pending fault codes
Service history, and whether annual Traction Battery Health Checks were done if extended cover is being claimed
