The RAV4 Hybrid is among the best-selling vehicles in Australia, which means it is now arriving on the used market in serious numbers. That is good news for a buyer: there is choice, and with choice comes the ability to be selective about battery condition rather than taking what you can get.
What's normal
Australian specialists and remanufacturers put typical hybrid traction battery life at 8 to 10 years or roughly 160,000 to 200,000 kilometres, with a fault typically appearing once health drops to around 70 per cent. Most RAV4 Hybrids on the used market today are well inside that window, so a healthy pack is the expectation rather than the hope.
What varies is how hard the individual car has worked. A RAV4 Hybrid used for towing, loaded family duty, or as a delivery or rideshare vehicle cycles its battery far more than a suburban commuter, and cycles are what age a hybrid pack.
The chemistry question we cannot resolve
Australian motoring press reported the 2019-era RAV4 Hybrid as nickel-metal-hydride. For 2021 through 2026 models, we could not find any Australian source stating the chemistry, and we are not going to guess — Toyota has been progressively moving its hybrids to lithium-ion (Camry in August 2020, Corolla in 2023, C-HR in 2024), but we have no Australian confirmation for the RAV4.
This matters because it determines your repair options. Nickel-metal-hydride packs have a well-developed Australian module-repair and reconditioning industry behind them. Lithium-ion packs, at present, do not.
If you are buying a 2021-or-later RAV4 Hybrid and the battery's long-term cost matters to you, have the pack identified from the vehicle rather than from an article. That includes this one.
For completeness: the 2026 RAV4 plug-in hybrid uses a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion pack, which is a different proposition entirely and carries plug-in hybrid economics.
What actually fails
Individual modules, overwhelmingly — voltage sag under load and rising internal resistance in a small number of cells, dragging the pack to a fault while most of it remains healthy. After that, the cooling system: a blocked intake filter or a failed fan, which Toyota flags with its own message, "Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts." Then the battery ECU, then connector and busbar corrosion.
A RAV4 that spends its life carrying a family, a dog and a boot full of sand is a strong candidate for a blocked cooling intake. It is worth a look before anyone quotes you for a battery.
What to check before you buy
Module or block voltage spread, the earliest reliable indicator
Stored and pending fault codes, including ones not yet showing on the dash
The cooling intake near the rear seat, for dust, lint and pet hair
Whether the car has been used commercially, which caps Toyota's warranty at 160,000 km instead of unlimited
Whether the annual Traction Battery Health Checks were done, if the seller is claiming extended cover
Towing history, which is hard on a hybrid driveline
