Avoca and the surrounding beaches have a high proportion of holiday homes, family-shared vehicles and cars that stay with a property rather than with a person. That produces a battery history with a particular characteristic: no consistent habits at all.
Habits are what preserve a pack
Most of the good advice about electric vehicle batteries comes down to routine. Set a charge limit around 80% for daily use. Avoid sitting at 100% for long periods. Charge slowly at home rather than fast-charging when you do not have to. Do not leave it near empty for weeks.
A single owner develops that routine, often without thinking about it, and it compounds quietly in the vehicle's favour over years.
A shared or holiday vehicle has nobody's routine. Different drivers, different assumptions, and usually the same default: plug it in and leave it at 100%, because whoever arrives next should have a full charge.
That default is the one thing worth changing. A cell held near full sits at a higher voltage, and higher voltage accelerates the chemistry that permanently removes capacity. Over years of sitting full between visits, it is measurable.
LFP is the exception — BYD, and Tesla's Standard Range and RWD models — where a regular full charge is actually recommended so the battery management system can recalibrate. Establish the chemistry before deciding what to do.
Long gaps, and what actually matters in them
A holiday vehicle may sit for weeks. The relevant question is not how long it sat — it is what state of charge it sat at, and how hot it was.
A vehicle left at 100% on an open driveway through a Central Coast January is in the worst combination available. The same vehicle left at 50-60% under a carport is in close to the best.
What that means if you are buying one
Low kilometres, coastal climate, garaged — all the surface signals point to an easy life, and the price usually reflects that.
The battery is the one component where those signals do not reliably predict the outcome. A measurement is how you find out whether the premium is justified. Frequently it is. Occasionally it is not, and that is exactly when you want to know.
The coast itself is kind
Ocean-moderated, mild summers by Sydney standards, reliable overnight cooling. Heat is the primary driver of permanent capacity loss and there is comparatively little of it here. Salt is a body and underbody matter, not a battery one — the pack is sealed — though on an older coastal vehicle a mechanical inspection for corrosion is worth having alongside a battery read.
