Manly has a use pattern you rarely see elsewhere in Sydney: a large number of cars that barely move during the working week. The ferry does the commute. The car does the weekend.
That produces low-kilometre vehicles, and low kilometres sell well. But a battery ages two ways at once, and only one of them is about distance.
Cycling tracks energy through the pack — roughly, kilometres. Calendar ageing happens whether the car moves or not, and it is driven by temperature and by the state of charge the pack sits at. A car parked five days a week is still ageing on those five days, and how fast depends almost entirely on what it was left charged to.
A pack left at 100% sits at a higher cell voltage, and higher voltage accelerates the chemistry that permanently removes capacity. A car plugged in and charged to full every Sunday night, then left until Saturday, has spent most of its life at high voltage. The same car left at 50-60% would have aged measurably less.
This is the single most avoidable thing owners do to their batteries, and almost nobody is told about it. Nearly every modern EV has a charge limit setting — 80% for daily use is the usual advice.
So a low-kilometre Manly car may be excellent or may be quietly tired, and the odometer will not distinguish them. This is one of the clearest cases where measuring changes what a car is worth.
What Manly does well
The climate is close to ideal for a battery. Peninsula, ocean on both sides, strongly temperature-moderated, and none of the extreme heat days that drive capacity loss in the west. On the worst February afternoon Manly is a different city from Penrith.
The driving is shallow too — short trips, low speeds, plenty of regeneration. Very few complete cycles accumulate.
The parking complication
Manly's housing is dense and off-street parking is scarce. A lot of cars live on the street, uncovered, which removes the garaging advantage that other coastal suburbs enjoy and means a car can sit in full sun all day. Combined with a high state of charge, that is the harder end of calendar ageing.
